Impact of the Tabac Info Service on smoking cessation: smoking status of callers four months after their call, September–December 2002.
Starting October 1, 2003, every pack of cigarettes will feature one of the 14 specific health warnings mandated by the decree of March 5, 2003. One of these warnings refers to Tabac Info Service: Get help to quit smoking; call 0825 309 310 (€0.15/min.). The Tabac info service (TIS) program, created in September 1998, has been operating since January 2002 with a two-tier call-handling system. Callers are greeted by trained telephone counselors who answer simple questions, provide addresses for smoking cessation centers, and send out informational materials. Smokers who state they need help are put in touch (immediately or by appointment) with one of the certified tobacco specialists on call for the hotline. These specialists are coordinated by the French Office for Tobacco Prevention (OFT). The consultation with the tobacco specialist, lasting an average of 15 to 20 minutes, is personalized. It may be followed by a second follow-up appointment.[article excerpt]
