Key Points

  • In Week 2 (January 8–14), the first week back after the end-of-year holidays, emergency room visits increased among 2- to 14-year-olds (+8%, or 4,254 visits), decreased among children under 2 (-23%, or 6,305 visits), and remained stable among adults. Hospitalizations following visits remained stable across all age groups.

  • Seasonal respiratory indicators were mostly down across all age groups. Flu-related visits were down among adults (-22%, -825 visits) and remained stable among children. Pneumonia-related visits were down across all age groups (-21%) but remained at levels higher than the previous two seasons among children.

  • Other indicators were also down among both adults and children. Notable increases among 2- to 14-year-olds included visits for trauma (+42%, or +5,065 visits), nonspecific abdominal pain (+25%, or +629 visits), and suicide attempts (+27%, or +40 visits).

  • Finally, among adults, following the sharp increase observed in week 52 for digestive conditions (gastroenteritis and vomiting), a decline in these indicators was observed for the second consecutive week (–34% and –18%, respectively). However, the levels observed remained slightly higher than those of recent years.
