Sleep: average sleep duration over 24 hours and reports of insomnia. Santé publique France Health Barometer: results from the 2024 edition
In 2024, the average 24-hour sleep duration reported by adults aged 18 to 79 is 7 hours and 32 minutes. 21.5% are considered "short sleepers" (sleeping 6 hours or less), with men and people aged 40 to 59 being the most affected. One-third of adults report insomnia (difficulty falling asleep or waking up during the night), with a particularly high proportion among women aged 70 to 79 (43.4%). Those most affected by sleep disturbances are manual laborers, office workers, those with the lowest educational attainment, and, to an even greater extent, people reporting financial difficulties. Regional disparities are observed: sleep indicators are particularly poor in the overseas departments and regions (DROM). In mainland France, the western regions (Brittany and Pays de la Loire) stand out for having longer sleep durations and lower proportions of short sleepers.
