Measles Epidemiological Bulletin. Surveillance data as of June 13, 2019
Key Points
Since January 1, 2019, 1,587 cases of measles have been reported (vs. 2,451 cases during the same period in 2018), including 468 (29%) hospitalizations (20 in intensive care), 115 cases (7%) complicated by pneumonia, 2 cases of encephalitis, including 1 death (subacute encephalitis in an immunocompromised patient).
The circulation of the measles virus has intensified, with 114 cases (on average) during weeks S18 through S22, compared to 75 cases (on average) during the previous 8 weeks.
81 departments reported at least 1 case during the period.
87% of cases occurred in unvaccinated or incompletely vaccinated individuals (out of a total of 1,112 cases, aged over one year and born since 1980, for whom vaccination status was known).
The occurrence of nosocomial cluster cases underscores the importance of keeping healthcare workers’ vaccination statuses up to date.
