Corsica Public Health Bulletin. April 2018.

Key Points

  • Vaccination coverage (VC) for the diphtheria-tetanus-polio, pertussis, and Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) booster among children aged 24 months was consistently above 95%, both in Southern Corsica and in Northern Corsica. These VC rates are generally on par with national data.

  • The "3-dose" hepatitis B CV among children aged 24 months reached 93% and was on the rise compared to the past two years, with an increase of nearly 10 percentage points in Southern Corsica since 2014 and nearly 20 percentage points in Northern Corsica. The CV in Corsica exceeds the national level.

  • The "3-dose" pneumococcal vaccination coverage among children aged 24 months was similar for both departments and stood at 95% across all of Corsica. The trend is upward, and the coverage rate is higher than the rate for France as a whole.

  • The "1-dose" measles, mumps, and rubella vaccination coverage among children aged 24 months nearly reached the 95% target. These figures have been rising over the past three years. The "2-dose" vaccination coverage was lower, at 88% in Southern Corsica and 84% in Northern Corsica. The 1- and 2-dose vaccination coverage rates are higher than the national average. However, they are not yet sufficient to prevent an outbreak.

  • Regardless of birth cohort, vaccination coverage rates for human papillomavirus are very low, with fewer than one in six adolescent girls having completed the vaccination series. Furthermore, coverage rates are significantly lower than the national average.

  • Between 2015 and 2017, vaccination coverage against meningococcal C increased across all age groups. However, coverage remains low. Regional vaccination coverage reached 68% at age 2, 65% among 2- to 4-year-olds, 59% among 5- to 9-year-olds, 25% among 10- to 14-year-olds, and 13% among 15- to 19-year-olds. These rates are insufficient to ensure the herd immunity necessary to protect the youngest children. In particular, catch-up vaccination among those over 5 years of age is low and decreases with age.
