The Role of the REVELA13 Surveillance Network in the Epidemiology of Bladder Cancer in Women in the Bouches-du-Rhône Department
Introduction: The REVELA13 registry is a unique epidemiological tool that tracks new cases of kidney and bladder cancer, as well as acute leukemia, in the Bouches-du-Rhône department. The objective of this study was to analyze, for the first time, data from this registry for new cases of bladder cancer in women (stage ≥T1) in the Bouches-du-Rhône department from 2012 to 2014. Materials: This was a descriptive observational epidemiological study. Fifteen non-identifying variables from the REVELA13 database were analyzed to describe the clinical and pathological characteristics of incident cases as well as their spatial and temporal distribution. Incidence rates, expressed as new cases per year per 100,000 inhabitants, were age-standardized globally, calculated with their 95% confidence intervals, and compared to national estimates for the same period. Results: A total of 291 new diagnoses of bladder tumors were recorded, representing a global age-standardized incidence of 3.85 [3.32–4.37] new cases per year per 100,000 inhabitants, which is 54% higher than the national estimates for 2012 and 2015. The sex ratio was 19.41% (F/M) and the median age at diagnosis was 75.9 years. The tumors were predominantly non-muscle-invasive (52%), high-grade (69%), and without associated carcinoma in situ (CIS) (49%). The two most affected areas were Marseille and Aubagne-La Ciotat. Conclusion: The REVELA13 registry has improved our epidemiological understanding of female bladder tumors in the Bouches-du-Rhône department and highlighted a local excess incidence. Level of evidence: 3.
