Opinions of general practitioners in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region on mandatory or recommended vaccination policies for the general population, 2015
Introduction: Against the backdrop of the current national debate on vaccination—specifically regarding whether to maintain the principle of mandatory vaccination for the general population—this study aims to better understand the views of general practitioners (GPs) in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur (PACA) region on the continuation of mandatory vaccinations for the general population. Methodology: A random sample of 440 GPs in the PACA region was surveyed in the first half of 2015 regarding their opinions on mandatory vaccinations for the public and any potential difficulties associated with their coexistence with recommended vaccinations. Simple and multiple logistic regression analyses were performed to test the factors associated with various explanatory variables. Results: The vast majority of GPs in the PACA region (92%) were in favor of mandatory vaccination, and 24% were even in favor of expanding the list of mandatory vaccines. The coexistence of mandatory and recommended vaccines was not only a source of difficulty for nearly one-third of GPs but was also accompanied, for 39% of participants, by misconceptions regarding the relative importance of vaccines. Believing that all vaccines should be mandatory was associated with the perception of difficulties in explaining the coexistence of mandatory and recommended vaccines, as well as with stronger convictions regarding the usefulness of vaccines. Discussion: The results suggest that GPs fear the consequences of lifting the vaccination mandate. It is essential that they be actively involved in the national debate on vaccination so that their concerns can be addressed.
