Epidemiological Surveillance in the Pays de la Loire Region. Update as of March 8, 2017.
Over the past week in the region:
End of the influenza A(H3N2) outbreak in the Pays de la Loire region. This outbreak occurred early and was of moderate intensity in outpatient care. However, the impact was significant among older adults, with a high number of:
- visits to SOS Médecins, emergency room visits, and hospitalizations for acute lower respiratory infections among people aged 75 and older;
- hospitalizations for severe influenza in intensive care (154 cases, 61% of which were in people aged 65 and older);
- outbreaks of ARI in nursing homes (226 since September 2016 among the region’s 583 nursing homes).
An excess of all-cause mortality was observed, primarily among people aged 65 and older, during the month of January, with a peak during the first week. The contribution of influenza to this excess was estimated at nearly 70% at the national level.
The bronchiolitis epidemic among infants under 2 years of age is ending after a slow decline that lasted nearly 2 months following the peak in late December.
SOS Médecins consultations, emergency room visits, and hospitalizations for gastroenteritis among young children increased last week, likely marking the start of rotavirus circulation (to be confirmed next week).
