Epidemiological surveillance in the Pays de la Loire region. Update as of January 8, 2020.

Key points

Gastroenteritis

Activity remained high last week in the Pays de la Loire region, with a high number of emergency room visits and SOS Médecins calls for gastroenteritis. The number of SOS Médecins calls continued to rise last week, while emergency room visits remained stable compared to the previous week. Activity levels were high compared to the same period in the two previous years.
Several factors could explain this exceptional surge: the high incidence of viral gastroenteritis during this season and, at the same time, a higher number than in previous years of suspected foodborne illness outbreaks (Tiac) believed to be linked to the consumption of raw shellfish during the holiday season.

Bronchiolitis

The 6th week of the bronchiolitis epidemic among children under two years of age in the Pays de la Loire region, with the peak having passed. A decrease in the number of emergency room visits and SOS Médecins calls for bronchiolitis was observed last week.

Flu

For the past three weeks, the Pays de la Loire region has been in the pre-epidemic phase of the flu. Flu surveillance indicators are stable for SOS Médecins calls and decreased for emergency room visits last week compared to the previous week. In addition, 28 cases of severe influenza requiring intensive care have been reported in the region since the start of the winter season, as well as 30 clusters of acute respiratory infections (ARI) in nursing homes since October 1, 2019.
