Epidemiological Surveillance in the Pays de la Loire Region. Update as of January 5, 2016.

Over the past week in the region:

  • The number of new cases of bronchiolitis seen by SOS Médecins has fallen by half compared to week 50. In contrast, the number of cases in the pediatric emergency departments at Nantes University Hospital has remained at a high plateau for the past four weeks. This situation has had a significant impact on emergency room visits by infants under 1 year of age, with 770 visits instead of the 445 expected across the 7 sentinel hospitals.

  • Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) isolates are decreasing despite several cases of infection diagnosed in adults at Angers University Hospital. Influenza viruses remain rare (1 isolate of influenza B at Nantes University Hospital last week).

  • A sharp increase in pneumonia diagnoses has been observed since week 50 among the elderly in emergency departments and through SOS Médecins. It is highly likely that this increase is linked to RSV infections.

  • Cases of gastroenteritis are unusually low for this time of year.
