Epidemiological Surveillance in the Pays de la Loire Region. Update as of January 3, 2020.
Key points
Gastroenteritis
High activity in terms of emergency room visits and SOS Médecins calls for gastroenteritis in the Pays de la Loire region last week, with an increase nearly twice that of the previous week. Activity levels were also high compared to the same period in the previous two years. This increase was observed primarily starting on December 26 and particularly affected people over the age of 15.
Several factors could explain this exceptional surge: the high incidence of viral gastroenteritis during this season, coupled with a higher number of suspected foodborne illness outbreaks (Tiac) compared to previous years, believed to be linked to the consumption of raw shellfish during the holiday season.
Bronchiolitis
The fifth week of a bronchiolitis outbreak among children under two years of age in the Pays de la Loire region, with an increase in the number of emergency room visits for bronchiolitis and a slight decrease in SOS Médecins calls for bronchiolitis last week.
Flu
For the past two weeks, the Pays de la Loire region has been in the pre-epidemic phase of the flu. Flu surveillance indicators are on the rise for both emergency room visits and SOS Médecins calls. In hospital emergency rooms, this increase particularly affected children. Additionally, 24 cases of severe flu have been reported in the region since the start of the winter season.
