Surveillance of Gastroenteritis in Mayotte. Epidemiological Update as of August 19, 2019.

Key Points

  • An outbreak of acute gastroenteritis (AGE) was detected in Mayotte in July 2019.

  • Over the past five weeks, a seasonal increase in visits for gastroenteritis has been identified in the emergency department of the Mayotte Hospital Center (CHM). This trend has also been observed for the past three weeks by the network of sentinel physicians in Mayotte.

  • The outbreak primarily affects children under 5 years of age.

  • Weather conditions during the southern winter are conducive to the spread of enteric viruses such as rotaviruses. Thus, a viral origin is strongly suspected, but the identification of the pathogens is still ongoing.

  • In this context, it is important to remind the public of hygiene measures to limit the spread of gastroenteritis in the population.
