Surveillance of Bronchiolitis in Mayotte. Epidemiological Update as of February 22, 2018.
Epidemiological Situation
In Mayotte, an increase in bronchiolitis is usually observed during the rainy season. It is most often caused by a virus called respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), which affects the small bronchi, typically in infants and children under 2 years of age. In Mayotte, the majority of cases are seen and treated in the hospital. Patients may be admitted to the pediatric ward, and those with severe cases may be admitted to the intensive care unit.
Since late January, an increase in emergency room visits for bronchiolitis has been observed among children under 2 years of age, reflecting the seasonal resurgence of this condition. This resurgence, also noted by Mayotte’s sentinel physician network, coincides with the pertussis epidemic, making differential diagnosis difficult given the similarity of clinical presentations.
