Surveillance of Bronchiolitis in Mayotte. Epidemiological Update as of April 13, 2017.
Epidemiological Situation
In Mayotte, bronchiolitis surveillance is based on activity data from the emergency department of the Mayotte Hospital Center (CHM) and from the network of sentinel physicians.
While the epidemic appeared to be subsiding in the last epidemiological update, this trend has not continued over the past two weeks. In fact, an increase in bronchiolitis activity is once again being observed. The proportion of visits for bronchiolitis among children under 2 years of age stood at 23% last week. In total, between December 5, 2016, and April 9, 2017, 545 visits for bronchiolitis among children under 2 years of age were recorded in the CHM emergency department.
The 2016–2017 bronchiolitis epidemic does not appear to be more severe than in previous seasons, but it is characterized by a duration twice as long (18 versus 8 weeks) and, consequently, by twice as many emergency department visits (545 versus the usual 300 visits).
