Public Health Bulletin: Reportable Diseases in Réunion. October 2019.

Surveillance of Notifiable Diseases in Réunion, 2018

Invasive meningococcal infections

  • Low reporting rate; Group B predominates; no cases linked to Group C meningococcal disease between 2015 and 2018.

Hepatitis A

  • Disease preventable by vaccination. The number of cases and the reporting rate were higher in 2017 and 2018 compared to 2015 and 2016, particularly due to imported cases following travel to endemic countries—primarily Madagascar.

Legionellosis

  • Most cases reported between 2015 and 2018 occurred during the warm summer months. In 2018, 8 cases were clustered over a short period of time, though no common source of exposure could be identified.

Measles

  • A vaccine-preventable disease. Few cases between 2015 and 2018. Resurgence in the number of cases in 2019: as of August 25, 2019, 32 hospitalizations could have been prevented by vaccination (individual and collective protection). Reporting upon clinical suspicion is essential.

Outbreak of foodborne illness

  • Decrease in the number of reported outbreaks between 2015 and 2018; probable underreporting.

Tuberculosis

  • Stable reporting rate between 2012 and 2017, then decreasing in 2018. Men over 25 are the most affected.

Lead poisoning

  • Ongoing study to identify sources of exposure and factors contributing to lead exposure among children under 7 years of age in the municipality of Le Port.
