  • In 2017, 22 daily visits to the island’s emergency departments were directly related to alcohol, representing 4.6% of all annual emergency department visits (1.4% for France as a whole).

  • The crude rate of emergency department visits directly related to alcohol was highest among men aged 46–60 (16.8%).

  • Alcohol intoxication is the most common condition among emergency department visits directly related to alcohol: 3.8% of all emergency department activity on Réunion (0.9% for all of France) (Oscour®).

  • The mortality rate for the main conditions directly linked to alcohol is 40% higher than in mainland France among men (68.3 per 100,000 versus 49.2) (Cépi-Dc, Inserm).

  • Beer and spirits are consumed in greater quantities in Réunion than in mainland France.
