Malaria in Mayotte. Report for January through July 2025.

Key Points

  • For the first time since July 2020, twelve cases of locally acquired malaria were reported in Mayotte: one in February, one in June, and ten in July 2025;

  • Between January 1 and July 31, 2025, 54 imported malaria cases were recorded in Mayotte, bringing the total number of malaria cases reported in Mayotte during this period to 66;

  • 26 of the 66 cases (39%) required hospitalization, including 5 who were admitted to the intensive care unit. No deaths were recorded;

  • 83% of imported cases in 2025 originated from the Union of the Comoros;

  • Plasmodium falciparum is the predominant species, accounting for 100% of cases reported in Mayotte in 2025

  • There has been a gradual increase in the number of imported cases over the past 5 years, peaking in 2024 (119 imported cases)

  • Mayotte has been in the malaria elimination phase since 2014. However, with the continued increase in imported cases in recent years, maintaining malaria control measures is essential to prevent a resurgence of transmission in Mayotte.
