• In 2022, 169 cases were reported to the ARS Réunion.

• The trend of a continuous increase in the annual reporting rate, observed since 2016, continued in 2022.

• The epidemic maintained its usual seasonal pattern, with a peak in March that persisted into April.

• The majority of cases were men (93%) with a mean age of 51 years (min=10; max=83). Cases were primarily located in municipalities in the South (55%) or West (22%).

• In 54% of cases, respondents reported no occupational activity (unemployed, retired, students). When they reported an occupation at risk for leptospirosis, it was predominantly that of farmer and/or livestock breeder.

• Hospitalization was required for 68% of cases (27% in intensive care and 41% outside intensive care). Three cases were fatal.

• To reduce the number of leptospirosis cases and the associated public health impact, management and prevention measures must be strengthened:

  • Identification of suspected sites and activities of contamination;

  • Implementation of coordinated field interventions aimed at limiting reservoir populations, including rats, or contact with reservoir animals (vaccinable or not) or contaminated environments;

  • Reminder of personal protective measures (complete and appropriate personal protective equipment, wound protection, etc.)
