Influenza Surveillance in Réunion. Epidemiological Update as of December 14, 2017.
Epidemiological Situation
The seasonal flu epidemic, which began late this year in August, was severe. It peaked in early October. Since then, influenza activity has declined sharply in emergency departments and primary care settings and is approaching the usual baseline levels for this time of year. Since the beginning of the year, the number of severe influenza cases hospitalized in intensive care (mostly at high risk of complications and unvaccinated) has been well above the peak levels observed during the 2010–2015 period.Although its prevalence is declining, the B virus has been the predominant strain circulating, along with the A(H1N1)pdm09 and non-H1N1 A viruses (including the A(H3N2) subtype). A flu epidemic is currently underway in Mayotte. In mainland France, two regions are in the pre-epidemic phase, and in Europe, although influenza activity is at baseline levels, a seasonal resurgence is expected in the coming weeks. In this context, it is important to remind the public of measures to prevent the transmission of influenza (barrier measures) and the option of vaccination, particularly for those planning to travel to epidemic areas.
