Key Points

Flu

  • The number of emergency department visits for flu-like illness increased by 32% in Week 41 compared to the previous week (79 emergency department visits in Week 41 versus 60 in Week 40).

  • Hospitalizations also rose, with 22 hospitalizations in Week 41 versus 17 in Week 40. People under the age of 15 accounted for 39% of emergency department visits for flu-like symptoms in Week 41. The proportion of emergency department activity due to the flu remained low, however, accounting for only 1.9% of total activity.

Bronchiolitis

  • Emergency department visits due to bronchiolitis among children under 2 years of age were on the rise, with 51 visits in Week 41 compared to 40 in Week 40.

  • The number of new hospitalizations was down in S41, with 17 hospitalizations versus 24 in S40.

Gastroenteritis

  • Gastroenteritis epidemic: Indicators have started to rise again and remain at a high level. Réunion remains in the midst of a gastroenteritis epidemic.

COVID-19

  • The number of emergency room visits due to COVID-19 remained low, with no change in visits in Week 41 compared to the previous week (6 visits in Week 41, as in Week 40).

  • The number of hospitalizations following an emergency department visit due to COVID-19 was also low, with only 3 hospitalizations in Week 41 versus 4 hospitalizations in Week 40.

Dengue

  • During the southern winter, surveillance continues but without weekly reporting. Activity levels are very low.
