Key Points

Influenza

  • In Week 34, the number of emergency department visits for influenza-like illness showed a moderate increase, with 15 visits in Week 34 compared to 12 visits in Week 33 (Figure 5). Hospitalizations also increased, with 4 hospitalizations compared to 1 in Week 33.

  • The proportion of emergency department visits due to influenza remained low, at less than 1% over the past four weeks.

  • With the end of the flu epidemic, virological surveillance identified the predominant circulation of influenza A(H3N2). The positivity rate was stable in Week 34, with 16% of tests positive for influenza in Week 34 compared to 17% in Week 33.

Bronchiolitis

  • Emergency department visits due to bronchiolitis among children under 2 years of age rose sharply, with 20 visits in Week 34 compared to 8 visits in Week 33.

  • The number of new hospitalizations also increased in Week 34, with 6 hospitalizations compared to 3 in Week 33.

  • The proportion of emergency department visits for bronchiolitis among all visits by children under two years of age was 8.7% in Week 34 compared to 3.8% in Week 33.

Gastroenteritis

  • A sharp increase in emergency department visits due to gastroenteritis, primarily among children under 5 years of age.

COVID-19

  • The number of emergency department visits due to COVID-19 was on the rise, with 9 visits in Week 34 compared to 3 the previous week.

  • Despite this increase, no emergency department visits due to COVID-19 were followed by hospitalization in Week 34. In Week 33, only one hospitalization following an emergency department visit was recorded, as in Week 32.
