Health Monitoring in Mayotte. Update as of December 21, 2023.

Key points

Gastroenteritis

  • The seasonal outbreak of acute rotavirus gastroenteritis has ended since week S47.

  • Sales of anti-diarrheal medications and oral rehydration solutions in pharmacies rose in week 50 to a level higher than that seen in 2014–2022.

  • Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) and Enteroaggregative Escherichia coli (DAEC) were identified in the majority of stool samples analyzed.

  • Severe cases of acute gastroenteritis admitted to the intensive care unit at the Mayotte hospital: 22 cases between weeks 36 and 48, with no new cases since then.

Bronchiolitis

  • The number of samples and the RSV positivity rate have been increasing slowly but steadily over the past four weeks, justifying a transition to the pre-epidemic phase in week 50.

Influenza

  • The positivity rate for Influenza A(H3N2) remains stable at a high level; the transition to the epidemic phase occurred in week 44.

COVID-19

  • Decrease in viral circulation since Week 45; the positivity rate is 5% in Week 50 (vs. 26% in Week 45). Three severe cases admitted to the ICU in Weeks 45 and 48.

Water shortage

  • Since October 11, 2023, water outages have occurred two days out of three, but access to water has been reduced to 18 hours instead of 24 hours. Starting December 22, 2023, the outages will be eased, and water will be distributed one day out of three for 24 hours.
