Dengue Surveillance in Réunion. Update as of April 7, 2022.

Key Points

  • Reunion Island remains in an inter-epidemic period for dengue (data from Week 12), with weekly case numbers on the rise but still significantly lower than in previous years. For the past four years, the resurgence of the epidemic has occurred between Weeks 8 and 9.

  • The past few weeks have been marked by the absence of new hospitalizations. In 2021, from Week 01 to Week 12, the number of hospitalizations was 242.

  • Only the DENV-1 serotype is currently circulating in the region (46 serotyping tests conducted on approximately 180 positive PCR results from December 2021 to March 2022).

  • The South sector continues to have the highest number of cases, with the West and North sectors also seeing an increase in new infections. During weeks 11 and 12, two clusters of cases were identified, and enhanced surveillance measures were implemented.

  • To best identify cases and prevent an epidemic outbreak, it is:

    • necessary to seek early medical consultation at the first signs and obtain laboratory confirmation in cases of suspected dengue (with PCR being the gold standard test).

    • essential to maintain individual prevention measures (use of repellents and mosquito nets) and collective measures (elimination of larval breeding sites, removal of stagnant water).
