Dengue Surveillance in Réunion. Epidemiological Update as of October 16, 2018.

Epidemiological Situation

Since the beginning of 2018, 6,627 biologically confirmed or probable cases of dengue (including 9 imported from Polynesia, Brazil, Thailand, the Maldives, and Myanmar) have been reported by private and hospital laboratories in Réunion. The only serotype identified in 2018 among autochthonous cases is DENV-2 (911 genotypes identified). This situation follows an unusual, low-level viral circulation during 2017, when persistent transmission was observed during the southern winter.

In week S2018-39/40 (data from September 24 to October 7):

  • 20 probable or confirmed cases of dengue were diagnosed through laboratory testing (including 14 in week 39 and 6 in week 40), based on the date of symptom onset

  • Confirmed and probable cases were located: - In the west: La Possession (4 cases), St Paul-Etang (2 cases), and Le Guillaume, La Saline, St Gilles les Hauts, St Paul Bois de Nèfles, Le Port, St Leu (1 case each),- In the south: Saint Louis (3 cases), Le Tampon (2 cases), and L'Etang Salé, Les Avirons, and St Pierre (1 case each).
