Dengue Surveillance in Réunion. Epidemiological Update as of April 30, 2019.

Key Points

In weeks 15 and 16, more than 5,600 clinically suggestive cases (3,243 and 2,381, respectively), bringing the total to more than 22,000 since the beginning of the year

More than 1,000 confirmed cases reported per week (1,116 cases in Week 15), bringing the number of confirmed cases since the start of the year to over 7,700

The spread of cases is significant: all municipalities have reported cases.

Cases reported in the municipalities of St. Joseph, St. Pierre, and Le Tampon continue to rise despite the fact that outbreaks in the south remain very active

An increase in cases is observed in the north, east, and west (St. Denis, St. Suzanne, St. André, St. Paul, and La Possession) as well as in L’Entre-Deux and St. Philippe

Local transmission of the DENV1 serotype has been detected in Petite Ile (14 cases)

Eight deaths were reported in 2019. Following investigations, four were considered directly linked to dengue and four indirectly linked.

In this context, vigilance is warranted regarding differential diagnoses (leptospirosis, measles, and Rift Valley fever)
