Dengue Surveillance in Réunion. Epidemiological Update as of April 30, 2018.

Epidemiological Situation

Since the beginning of 2018, 2,119 biologically confirmed or probable cases of dengue have been reported by private and hospital laboratories in Réunion (Figure 1), including 1,370 cases in April. The only serotype identified in 2018 is DENV-2 (690 genotypes). This situation follows an unusual, low-level viral circulation during 2017, when persistent transmission was observed during the southern winter. Starting in week S2018-04, the number of cases has continued to rise.

In week S2018-17 (April 23–29):

  • 298 biologically confirmed or probable dengue cases were reported by private and hospital laboratories in Réunion.

  • The reported cases were mainly located: - In the west: St-Paul, Gare routière, and Etang (48 cases), Bois de Nèfles and La Plaine (58 cases), St-Gilles-les-Bains (35 cases), St-Gilles-les-Hauts (17 cases), La Saline (13 cases), La Possession (12 cases), Le Port (21 cases), St-Leu (17 cases), - In the south: St-Pierre (12 cases), Ravine des Cabris (21 cases), and Le Tampon (12 cases), - In the north: Ste-Clotilde (3 cases).

  • Cases have also been identified in St-Joseph, Saint Louis, l'Etang Salé, and les Avirons. Ongoing investigations will help identify their presumed place of infection.
