COVID-19 and Other Respiratory Viruses in Réunion. Update as of September 8, 2022
Key Points
COVID-19
Week 35 marked a sharp decline in viral circulation across all age groups. Indeed, the incidence rate was 536 cases per 100,000 inhabitants (-33% compared to Week 34) and the positivity rate was 30% (-8 percentage points). The effective R value also decreased, standing at 0.75.
All major hospital indicators (incidence of hospitalizations, critical care admissions, and deaths) were also down in Week 35. New hospitalizations fluctuated around 110 new admissions per week.
Respiratory viruses continue to circulate on the island. In this context, it appears essential to incorporate preventive measures (wearing masks, handwashing) into daily routines as part of a comprehensive prevention strategy, particularly to protect the most vulnerable. In the event of symptoms, a positive test result, or exposure to a confirmed case, the recommended isolation measures must be followed.
Bronchiolitis
Emergency room visits due to bronchiolitis among children under 2 years of age increased slightly between Week 34 and Week 35, with 27 and 32 visits, respectively. The same trend applies to hospitalizations following an emergency room visit, with 10 hospitalizations in Week 35 compared to 8 in Week 34.
