COVID-19 and Other Respiratory Viruses in Réunion. Update as of February 2, 2023.

Key Points

COVID-19

  • In S04, viral circulation indicators (TI, TD, TP) and health impact indicators were sharply declining. The incidence rate fell below 100 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, and despite a corresponding decrease in the testing rate, the positivity rate also dropped sharply, falling by 7 percentage points to approach 20%. Hospital indicators had also been declining sharply for several weeks.

Bronchiolitis

  • There was an increase in emergency department visits, with 53 visits in W04-23 compared to 44 in W03-23, representing a 20% rise. Hospitalizations are also on the rise, with 28 hospitalizations in Week 4 vs. 25 in Week 3. The weather conditions—with high humidity—and the start of the school year last week are contributing to an increase in bronchiolitis cases among children under 2 years of age.

Flu

  • Influenza indicators continued to decline and have returned to baseline levels.

  • Hospital virological surveillance identified the predominant circulation of influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 viruses.
