COVID-19 and Other Respiratory Viruses in Réunion. Update as of August 4, 2022.

Key Points

COVID-19

  • Week 30 marks a slowdown in viral circulation. Indeed, the incidence rate has stabilized at 670 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, and the effective R has decreased to approach 1. The positivity rate rose slightly by more than 2 percentage points, while the testing rate decreased slightly.

  • Regarding hospital indicators, new hospitalizations remained stable at an average level, as did admissions to intensive care. Deaths continued to fluctuate at a low level.

Influenza

  • Regarding other respiratory viruses, Réunion remained in a flu epidemic during week 30, linked to the circulation of influenza A(H3N2) viruses in the community and in hospitals. The health impact of this circulation remains very limited, given the moderate number of emergency room visits. At the same time, there was a sharp decrease in emergency room visits for bronchiolitis among children under 2 years of age.

  • In the context of resurging COVID-19 and flu outbreaks, it appears essential to incorporate preventive measures (wearing masks, handwashing) into daily routines, as part of a comprehensive prevention strategy and particularly to protect the most vulnerable. In the event of symptoms, a positive test result, or exposure to a high-risk contact, the recommended isolation measures must continue.
