COVID-19 and Other Respiratory Viruses in Réunion. Update as of August 18, 2022.
Key Points
COVID-19
After a decline in Week 31, viral circulation appears to be stabilizing in Week 32 with a slight increase in the incidence rate. In fact, the incidence rate has fluctuated between 500 and 600 cases per 100,000 residents for the past four weeks. At the same time, the testing rate has seen a significant decrease over the past three weeks, leading to an increase in the positivity rate.
Regarding hospital indicators, new hospitalizations were declining after three weeks of stability at an average level. Admissions to intensive care were stable, as were deaths, which continued to fluctuate at a low level.
Influenza
Virological surveillance of influenza in hospitals shows a decrease in the circulation of influenza viruses, which are predominantly type A(H3N2). The positivity rate was 8% in Week 31 (vs. 10% in Week 30); it was 23% in Week 26 and has been declining ever since. In Week 31, the A(H3N2) virus accounted for 50% of positive influenza samples. In Week 31, there were 10 positive influenza samples for every 108 negative samples.
Bronchiolitis
Emergency department visits for bronchiolitis among children under 2 years of age remained stable between S31 and S32, with 31 and 28 visits, respectively. Hospitalizations following an emergency department visit decreased slightly, from 18 in S31 to 14 in S32.
