Introduction - The Gabriel Martin Hospital Center (CHGM) in Réunion has participated in the ongoing survey on accidents in daily life (Epac) since 2005. Methods - This survey is based on the collection, in the emergency department, of information on patients treated following an accident in daily life (AcVC): age, gender, residence, treatment received, and characteristics of the accident. Results - The standardized incidence rate of AcVCs in Réunion is lower than that in mainland France (4.3% versus 7.5%). The overrepresentation of males is much more pronounced there (sex ratio of 1.73 versus 1.27). Falls appear to be less common on the island, while the proportion of domestic accidents is higher. Certain specific accidents, such as stings from sea urchins or stonefish, were noted, particularly among tourists. The distributions by age, sex, location, activity, mechanism, as well as by injury and affected body part, show no variation over time. Discussion - Residents of Réunion are more likely to consult their primary care physician than to go to the emergency room for a minor injury, which would explain the low incidence rate observed on the island. The overrepresentation of males may be due to a difference in behavior. These results reinforce those from 2005 and provide a new basis for prevention initiatives specific to Réunion. (R.A.)
