Early pregnancies in Réunion: a 2009 study of 145 underage girls

Introduction-Method. In 2007, 12% of induced abortions in Réunion involved minors, which is twice the rate in mainland France, and the number of births to underage girls there was seven times higher. This questionnaire-based survey collected medical and social data on a population of minors who underwent an abortion or gave birth between April and October 2009 at various family planning clinics and maternity wards in Réunion. Results. More than 85% of the girls surveyed were enrolled in school, half of whom were in middle school or high school. In 23.4% of cases, the girls’ mothers had themselves experienced a first pregnancy before age 18. The primary care physician was the first healthcare professional contacted by 57.9% of the girls. Only 28.3% of them were using contraception at the time of conception. More than 52% of the young mothers wanted this pregnancy and/or child. Forced sexual intercourse was reported by 1.4% of the adolescents. Conclusion. In this study, early conception is not systematically associated with dropping out of school prior to pregnancy. Rather, these minors face issues with inconsistent use of contraceptives, most often due to a lack of planning regarding sexual intercourse. It is necessary to provide the best possible support to adolescents affected by early conception, particularly by strengthening the role of the general practitioner. (R.A.)
