Public Health Surveillance in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region. Epidemiological Update as of March 9, 2017.

Key Points

Mortality: Following the increase in mortality observed during January, the decline continued in week 08 (currently being finalized), with observed figures close to expectations.

Emergency department visits by vulnerable populations: activity in emergency departments remains stable among children under 1 year of age and adults aged 75 and older (whose activity remains above the alert threshold).

Virology: Among the 119 samples testing positive for respiratory viruses from the laboratories at the Bordeaux, Limoges, and Poitiers university hospitals, the majority tested positive for RSV (10 in Bordeaux, 3 in Limoges, and 19 in Poitiers). We also note the detection of 24 rhinoviruses/enteroviruses (9 in Bordeaux, 1 in Limoges, and 14 in Poitiers) and 20 influenza A viruses (6 in Bordeaux, 1 in Limoges, and 13 in Poitiers).

Gastroenteritis: Activity is stable according to data from SOS Médecins and Oscour®, with values remaining close to the alert threshold for the latter data source.

Bronchiolitis: indicators for bronchiolitis in both hospital and outpatient settings have been below epidemic thresholds for two consecutive weeks. However, the proportion of hospitalizations following emergency department visits for bronchiolitis among children under 2 years of age remained high in Week 9 (55% compared to 53% and 50% in Weeks 8 and 7, respectively). Activity in the AquiRespi network has decreased significantly, with 64 cases treated during the last shift. RSV is still being detected by the virology laboratories at the university hospitals in Bordeaux, Limoges, and Poitiers, but circulation is less active than in previous weeks. Nationally, the end of the epidemic has been declared in the regions of Brittany, Burgundy-Franche-Comté, and Occitanie.

Influenza and influenza-like illnesses: the epidemic has ended in the NA region, with a sharp decline in influenza activity in hospital emergency departments and at SOS Médecins, with values below the thresholds. The proportion of hospitalizations following visits to emergency departments for influenza continues to decline (from 12.5% in Week 8 of 2017 to 9.1% in Week 9, with 33.3% among those aged 65 and older in Week 9). The number of severe influenza cases continues to rise (85 cases since November 1, 2016, including 16 deaths). A new cluster of acute respiratory infections (ARI) has been reported in a long-term care facility since the start of week 09-2017, bringing the total number of reported clusters to 210; the total number of deaths reported following these clusters is 108. Nationally, the end of the epidemic is confirmed, with the epidemic having subsided in all regions.

Notifiable Diseases (ND): No new reports of hepatitis A this week.
