Public Health Surveillance in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region. Epidemiological Update as of March 29, 2017.

Key points

Mortality: observed figures are close to what is expected for this period.

Emergency department visits by vulnerable populations: among children under 1 year of age and adults aged 75 and older, emergency department activity is stable or declining, with figures close to those expected for this time of year.

Virology: The number of positive respiratory virus samples from the laboratories at the Bordeaux, Limoges, and Poitiers university hospitals remained stable in week 12 (92 positive samples). At the Poitiers University Hospital, of the 51 positive samples, the majority were for rhinovirus/enterovirus (20 samples), adenovirus, and coronavirus (6 samples each). At the Bordeaux University Hospital, of the 37 positive samples, the majority were also for rhinovirus/enterovirus (19 samples). In Limoges, 4 respiratory samples were positive, including 2 for RSV.

Gastroenteritis: Activity is generally stable according to SOS Médecins and Oscour® data, with values below the alert thresholds for both data sources.

Bronchiolitis: Indicators for bronchiolitis monitoring in hospital and outpatient settings are at the levels expected for this time of year. The number of cases managed by the AquiRespi network during the last shift was 49, which is stable compared to the previous week.

Influenza and influenza-like illnesses: low influenza activity in hospital emergency departments and among SOS Médecins, with values below alert thresholds. One new severe case of influenza was reported in week 12; the total number of severe influenza cases since November 1, 2016, is 86, including 19 deaths. No new clusters of acute respiratory infections (ARI) have been reported in long-term care facilities since the start of week 12-2017. Nationally, all indicators are at baseline levels, and sporadic detection of influenza viruses is observed.

Notifiable Diseases (ND): Of note this week: - An increase in sporadic cases of hepatitis A among males has been observed in the region since early 2017. - The increase in reported measles cases in the region since January 2017 indicates that the virus is actively circulating in several departments within the region.
