Public Health Surveillance in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region. Epidemiological Update as of June 29, 2017.

Key Points

Mortality: According to mortality data provided by INSEE, the observed number of deaths from all causes in week 24 remains below the expected level for this period. The trend is the same at the national level.

Emergency department visits by vulnerable populations: Emergency department activity among people aged 75 and older and those under 1 year of age remains close to what is expected for this period.

Virology: The number of positive respiratory virus samples from the university hospitals in Bordeaux, Limoges, and Poitiers remained stable in week 24 (32 positive samples). At the Poitiers and Bordeaux university hospitals, the majority were rhinovirus/enterovirus (13 and 17 samples, respectively).

Notifiable Diseases (ND): The increase in hepatitis A reports among the male population has continued since the beginning of 2017 in the region. Epidemic strains of the hepatitis A virus circulating among MSM in other regions have been detected in cases in Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Following an increase in the number of measles reports since January 2017, no new cases of measles were reported in June 2017.

Allergies: Allergy activity observed by SOS Médecins continues to decline in Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Across the region, the risk of grass pollen allergies remains high in most departments.

Chickenpox: Chickenpox activity, according to SOS Médecins data, is up compared to the previous week, with a rate close to the expected seasonal value.

Chikungunya, Dengue, and Zika – Enhanced surveillance in Nouvelle-Aquitaine: since May 1, when enhanced surveillance began in the region’s departments infested with Aedes albopictus, 25 suspected cases have been reported. Among them, 1 case of dengue has been confirmed.

Heat-related illnesses (HRI)

Activity has risen sharply, accounting for 1.2% (215 consultations) and 0.7% (388 visits) of total activity at SOS Médecins and the Oscour® network, respectively, following the issuance of an orange heat wave alert for all departments in the region during week 24. For the coming days, Météo-France does not forecast a heat wave alert.
