Public Health Surveillance in the Aquitaine Region. Epidemiological Update as of January 29, 2015.

Mortality: Following a rise in mortality observed in early January, the number of recorded deaths in Week 3 remains above threshold levels, though with a downward trend; these figures will be finalized next week. The same trend is observed in approximately half of the metropolitan regions.

Emergency room visits by vulnerable populations: According to available data, emergency room activity among vulnerable populations (under 1 year of age and 75 years and older) remains stable at a high level, close to the alert threshold.

Notifiable Diseases (ND) No unusual situation this week.

Acute gastroenteritis (AGE) Activity remains high in Aquitaine and across France, despite a decline in indicators over the past few weeks for all age groups.

Influenza and influenza-like illnessesIn Aquitaine, activity continues to intensify (16% of influenza-related activity for SOS Médecins, 0.8% for Oscour®). Start of the epidemic confirmed in France. Majority of influenza A(H3N2) viruses; insufficient vaccination coverage among at-risk populations and vaccine efficacy to be evaluated.

BronchiolitisDecrease in activity in both emergency departments and at SOS Médecins. However, a slight resurgence in the number of cases managed by the AquiRespi network is observed, similar to what was seen last year during the same period.

Respiratory virology and enterovirus meningitis: Significant circulation of seasonal respiratory viruses according to the Bordeaux University Hospital, notably influenza A (23%), RSV (27%), and rhinovirus (23%).

Carbon monoxide poisoning (update as of 01/28/15)Since September 2014, there have been 28 incidents of CO poisoning affecting 105 people in Aquitaine (2 deaths). Nationwide, 25 deaths have been recorded since September 2014.
