Public Health Surveillance in the Aquitaine Region. Epidemiological Update as of January 22, 2015.

Mortality: During the first two weeks of January, a significant increase in deaths was recorded, particularly among people aged 75 and older. This increase is also observed in nearly all other metropolitan areas.

Emergency room visits by vulnerable populationsAccording to available data, emergency room activity among vulnerable populations (children under 1 year of age and adults aged 75 and older) remains high, though below the alert threshold.

Reportable Diseases (MDO)No unusual situation this week.

Acute gastroenteritis (AGE)Sustained activity in Aquitaine and France, despite a decline in indicators over the past week.

Influenza and influenza-like illnessesIn Aquitaine, increased activity (12% of influenza-related activity for SOS Médecins, 0.6% for Oscour®). Nationally, the epidemic threshold has been crossed, with higher activity in the southern half of mainland France. Most influenza viruses are A(H3N2); vaccination coverage among at-risk populations is insufficient, and vaccine efficacy remains to be evaluated.

Bronchiolitis: Activity levels reported in emergency departments and by SOS Médecins have been below alert thresholds for the past two weeks, signaling the end of the epidemic period. The number of cases handled by the AquiRespi network remains stable at around 100.

Respiratory virology and enterovirus meningitis: Significant circulation of seasonal respiratory viruses according to the Bordeaux University Hospital, particularly RSV and rhinovirus.

Carbon monoxide poisoning (update as of 01/14/15)Since September 2014, there have been 24 incidents of CO poisoning affecting 99 people in Aquitaine. Nationally, 24 deaths have been recorded since September 2014, including two that occurred in Gironde in early January and were linked to the same incident (portable gas heater).
