Outbreaks involving carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE): Epidemiological situation as of January 16, 2012.The first outbreak involving CPE was reported to the InVS in 2004. To date, 152 such outbreaks have been reported by healthcare facilities and/or the National Reference Center for Antibiotic Resistance or other expert laboratories. The number of these outbreaks has been rising sharply since 2009. Specifically, 6 outbreaks were reported in 2009, 28 in 2010, 109 in 2011, and 1 in the first two weeks of 2012.
