Public Health Surveillance in the Aquitaine Region. Epidemiological Update as of December 12, 2013.

Mortality: Mortality rates recorded from vital statistics data, across all age groups, remain stable, with numbers slightly lower than in previous years during this period.

Emergency department visits by vulnerable populations: Continued increase in activity among children under 1 year of age, often observed at the start of the bronchiolitis epidemic. No significant changes among those over 75 years of age.

Reportable Diseases (MDO)No new cases of MDO this week in the region.

Virology and enterovirus meningitis: Current circulation of seasonal respiratory viruses according to Bordeaux University Hospital, particularly RSV; persistence of enteroviruses correlated with observed enterovirus meningitis cases.

Acute Gastroenteritis (AGE)Activity slightly up according to SOS Médecins and stable in emergency departments. In France, activity is generally comparable to previous seasons but is increasing across all age groups, and mainly among those under 15.

Influenza and influenza-like illnesses: Influenza activity slightly increased compared to the previous week.

Bronchiolitis: Sharp increase in activity reported by SOS Médecins (above the threshold) and Oscour® in Aquitaine. In France, activity is stable according to Oscour®. Continued increase in cases managed by the AquiRespi network (149 children on December 7 and 8).

Mushroom poisoningNo new cases in Aquitaine in week 49 according to CAPTV and Oscour® (total of 73 cases according to CAPTV and 22 according to Oscour® since July 2013).

Carbon monoxide poisoning: Since September 2013, 8 incidents involving 18 people, 12 of whom were transported to the emergency room (national level: 421 incidents, 1,294 people exposed, and 10 deaths).

School Absences: Absence rates remain stable; a few cases of acute gastroenteritis and flu-like symptoms have been reported.
