Public Health Surveillance in the Aquitaine Region. Epidemiological Update as of August 30, 2012.
Update as of August 30, 2012
Chikungunya/Dengue Surveillance: In mainland France, confirmed cases (imported and locally acquired) have been subject to mandatory reporting since April 2006. In departments where the Aedes albopictus mosquito is present—including Lot-et-Garonne since August 11, 2012—a local system for reporting and rapid confirmation of suspected cases has been implemented, combined with enhanced entomological surveillance and perifocal vector control measures (VCM). Since the start of enhanced surveillance in Lot-et-Garonne, 3 cases have been reported: 2 suspected autochthonous cases, pending biological confirmation, and 1 confirmed case of imported dengue (India).
2012 Drowning Survey (06/01–07/30): As of 08/23/12, the tally stands at 810 accidental drownings, including 311 deaths (an average of 3.7 deaths per day). Drownings affect all age groups. Half of these drownings occurred at sea, followed by swimming pools (18%), rivers (16%), lakes (12%), and other locations (bathtubs, ponds, etc.: 3%)
2012 Heat Wave and Health Alert System (06/01–08/31): no heat waves forecast for the coming days
PhysaTox Surveillance 2012 (July 1–August 31): Since early July, 32 cases of jellyfish stings have been reported by the sentinel network of beach lifeguard stations.
