Public Health Surveillance in the Aquitaine-Limousin-Poitou-Charentes Region. Epidemiological Update as of October 6, 2016.
Key Points
Mortality: The number of deaths recorded in week 38 of 2016, for all ages and for those aged 75 and older, remains below the expected levels for this time of year.
Emergency department visits by vulnerable populations: activity is stable and close to expected levels for this time of year.
Virology: Among the 36 samples testing positive for respiratory viruses from the laboratories at the Bordeaux and Poitiers University Hospitals, 28 were positive for rhinovirus (13 in Bordeaux and 15 in Poitiers), 1 for coronavirus, 2 for adenovirus, 3 for enterovirus (Bordeaux University Hospital), and 1 for parainfluenza (Poitiers University Hospital). Four cerebrospinal fluid samples positive for enterovirus were reported (3 in Bordeaux and 1 in Poitiers), and 4 emergency department visits for enterovirus meningitis were recorded.
Gastroenteritis: activity remains high, above the epidemic threshold for the fifth consecutive week for SOS Médecins consultations. Activity is declining and close to expected levels for emergency department visits. Nationally, an increase was observed among children under 15 according to Oscour® and SOS Médecins.
Bronchiolitis: Activity is on the rise according to data from the Oscour® and SOS Médecins networks in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, accounting for 3.5% and 3.7% of total activity among children under 2 years of age, respectively. The same trend is observed at the national level.
Asthma: activity is stable or declining according to data from SOS Médecins and Oscour® following the increase observed over the past 3 weeks. The observed figures are lower than those from the same period last year. Stabilization of asthma activity is also observed at the national level.
Chikungunya, Dengue, and Zika – Enhanced Surveillance as of 10/05/2016: Since May 1, when enhanced surveillance began in the five departments of the former Aquitaine region colonized by Aedes albopictus, 176 suspected cases have been reported. Among these, 21 cases of dengue, 55 cases of Zika, and 1 dengue/Zika co-infection—all imported—have been confirmed. One case of Zika transmitted sexually has been confirmed. There are no cases of indigenous vector-borne transmission.
Notifiable Diseases (ND): no unusual events involving ND in the region during week 39.
