Public Health Surveillance in the Aquitaine-Limousin-Poitou-Charentes Region. Epidemiological Update as of October 13, 2016.

Key Points

Mortality: The number of deaths recorded in week 39 of 2016, for all ages and those aged 75 and older, remains close to expected levels for this time of year in Nouvelle-Aquitaine and nationwide.

Emergency department visits by vulnerable populations: activity is slightly higher for children under 1 year of age and those aged 75 and older, close to expected levels for this time of year.

Virology: Among the 37 positive respiratory virus samples from the laboratories at the Bordeaux and Poitiers university hospitals, 33 were positive for rhinovirus (16 in Bordeaux and 17 in Poitiers), 2 for RSV (in Poitiers), 1 for parainfluenza (in Bordeaux), and 1 for coronavirus (in Poitiers). One cerebrospinal fluid sample positive for enterovirus was reported in Bordeaux, and 5 emergency department visits for enterovirus meningitis were recorded in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region.

Gastroenteritis: In Nouvelle-Aquitaine, activity remains high, exceeding the epidemic threshold for the sixth consecutive week for SOS Médecins consultations. Activity is stable and close to expected levels for emergency department visits. Nationally, the increase in SOS Médecins consultations continues.

Bronchiolitis: activity is stable, close to expected levels for this time of year according to data from the Oscour® network and SOS Médecins in Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Two samples tested positive for RSV at the Poitiers University Hospital. Start of surveillance by the AquiRespi network, with 8 children treated during the first shift of the season. An upward trend observed nationally among children under 2 years of age.

Influenza and influenza-like illnesses: monitoring has begun. Indicators are at baseline levels

Asthma: activity declining according to data from SOS Médecins and OSCOUR®. Nationally, asthma activity has stabilized.

Chikungunya, Dengue, and Zika – Enhanced surveillance as of 10/05/2016: since May 1, when enhanced surveillance began in the five departments of the former Aquitaine region infested with Aedes albopictus, 179 suspected cases have been reported. Among these, 22 cases of dengue, 57 cases of Zika, and 1 dengue/Zika co-infection—all imported—have been confirmed. One case of Zika transmitted sexually has been confirmed. There are no cases of indigenous vector-borne transmission.

Notifiable Diseases (ND): no unusual events involving notifiable diseases in the region during week 40.
