Public Health Bulletin: Chikungunya, Dengue, and Zika in Nouvelle-Aquitaine. 2012–2021 Overview

Key points

  • 676 cases of arbovirus diseases (including 674 imported cases) reported in Nouvelle-Aquitaine between 2012 and 2021; mostly cases of dengue fever, as well as 2 locally transmitted cases of Zika, transmitted sexually, reported in 2016

  • Increase in the number of cases in 2014, 2016, 2019, and 2020, linked to arbovirus outbreaks in the French overseas territories

  • Most cases reported during the enhanced surveillance period, from May to November (59%), with a peak in the number of cases in August

  • Most cases reported in Gironde (61%) and no cases reported in Creuse between 2012 and 2021

  • Decrease in the time to reporting during the enhanced surveillance period over the past 10 years (median of 10 days in 2021)

  • 621 municipalities in the region colonized by the tiger mosquito in 2021, representing 13.7% of all municipalities (a tenfold increase in six years)

  • Vector control measures implemented around cases in departments where a high percentage of the population was exposed to the tiger mosquito: Gironde, Landes, Lot-et-Garonne, and Pyrénées-Atlantiques
