Health Surveillance in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region. Epidemiological Update as of June 15, 2017.

Key Points

Mortality: According to mortality data provided by INSEE, the observed number of deaths from all causes during week 22 remains below the expected level for this period. The trend is the same at the national level.

Emergency room visits by vulnerable populations: Emergency room activity among people aged 75 and older and those under 1 year of age remains close to what is expected for this period.

Virology: The number of positive respiratory virus samples from the laboratories at the Bordeaux, Limoges, and Poitiers university hospitals decreased in week 23 (18 positive samples). At the Poitiers University Hospital, the majority were rhinovirus/enterovirus (11 samples). At the Bordeaux University Hospital, they were parainfluenza viruses (3 samples).

Notifiable Diseases (ND): The measles virus continues to circulate in the region despite a decline in measles reports in recent weeks.

Hepatitis A reports continued to rise in May in five departments of the region, with nearly half of these cases occurring in Gironde since early 2017. Epidemic strains of the hepatitis A virus circulating among MSM in other regions have been detected in cases in Nouvelle-Aquitaine.

Allergies: Allergy activity reported by SOS Médecins is declining in Nouvelle-Aquitaine after two weeks of increases. Nationally, allergy activity is also declining in week 23. Across the region, the risk of grass pollen allergies remains very high in most departments.

Chickenpox: Chickenpox activity, according to SOS Médecins data, is up compared to the previous week, though the rate remains below the seasonal alert threshold. Activity nationwide is moderate, according to the sentinel network.

Chikungunya, Dengue, and Zika – Enhanced surveillance in Nouvelle-Aquitaine: since May 1, when enhanced surveillance began in the region’s departments colonized by Aedes albopictus, 23 suspected cases have been reported. Among them, 1 case of dengue has been confirmed.

Heat-related illnesses

A decrease in heat-related illnesses was observed in week 23 according to SOS Médecins data. However, high activity was observed on June 11 (1.7% of total activity) linked to the rise in temperatures over the weekend, with the majority of heat-related consultations involving children under 15. No heat wave alerts were issued in the departments of Nouvelle-Aquitaine during week 23, according to Météo France.
