Health Surveillance in the Aquitaine Region. Epidemiological Update as of January 28, 2016.

Mortality: The mortality figures recorded in week 02 are in line with expected values for this time of year.

Emergency department visits by vulnerable populations: Emergency department activity for children under 1 year of age and adults aged 75 and older remains below the alert threshold, close to expected levels for this time of year.

Reportable Diseases (MDO)No unusual situations have been observed since early January 2016.

Carbon monoxide poisoningSince September 1, 2015, 22 incidents have been reported in Aquitaine, including 10 related to boilers/water heaters, 3 to the use of barbecues/fire pits, and 4 to generators. In total, 44 people had to be transported to the emergency room.

Acute Gastroenteritis (AG) In Aquitaine, significant epidemic activity with the epidemic threshold exceeded for SOS Médecins consultations. Moderate activity within expected ranges for emergency room visits. In nursing homes, 24 cluster cases reported over the past 5 weeks. In France, activity is increasing, with thresholds exceeded for the past 3 weeks for general practice consultations

Influenza: Influenza activity remains low in Aquitaine, with a pre-epidemic situation in half of the regions of mainland France and the start of an epidemic in Brittany. In Europe, activity ranges from low to moderate depending on the country. In Aquitaine, there were no severe cases of influenza and no clusters of acute respiratory infections (ARI) in week 03-2016.

Bronchiolitis: A slight uptick in activity during week 03, with 5.4% of SOS Médecins calls and 13.5% of emergency room visits involving children under 2 years of age. Activity at AquiRespi also increased, with 153 cases treated compared to 89 the previous week. A temporary resurgence in epidemic activity is often observed during this period. The proportion of positive RSV tests is decreasing (19% vs. 40% the previous week).

Respiratory Virology and Enterovirus MeningitisNo reports of enterovirus meningitis according to the Bordeaux University Hospital laboratory and one according to the Oscour® network. Among the 21 positive respiratory virus tests, 5 were rhinoviruses and 4 were RSV. One sample tested positive for influenza (A).

Chickenpox: A slight increase in activity, with values remaining below the alert threshold in S03.
