Headlines - Surveillance of Severe Influenza Cases Admitted to Intensive Care

During the surveillance period (week 44/2011 to week 15/2012), 308 severe cases were reported in France, primarily among adults with risk factors who were infected with the A(H3N2) virus. Individuals aged 65 and older account for 49% of severe cases, even though they represent only 17% of the general population. The significant proportion of vaccinated cases this year has led to an assessment of the vaccine’s effectiveness against severe forms of influenza requiring admission to intensive care. Ongoing analyses continue to suggest a decrease in vaccine efficacy this season compared to the 2010-2011 season. Since the start of surveillance, 6 severe cases have been reported in the Poitou-Charentes region.
