Health Monitoring of Forest Fires in Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Update as of July 28, 2022.

Key Points

  • Available data indicate a very moderate health impact of the fires on the general population, both in terms of consequences that can be directly linked to air pollution caused by the smoke plume (respiratory conditions, irritation, etc.) and in terms of the expected psychological impact, given the scale of the event and the emergency evacuations of the population. These latest findings are consistent with data from the Medical-Psychological Emergency Units (CUMP) activated in the Landes and Gironde regions, which report a low number of people currently being treated in connection with these fires.

  • This assessment should nevertheless be interpreted with caution, as the data do not cover the private medical sector and the system does not allow for the identification of affected individuals—with symptoms of varying severity—who have not sought medical care.
