COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for Nouvelle-Aquitaine as of July 16, 2020
Summary
A slight increase in the spread of the virus in Nouvelle-Aquitaine
For several weeks, approximately 50 new cases of COVID-19 were identified each week in the region. Over the past two weeks, the number of positive cases has been rising, with 104 positive cases recorded in week 28 of 2020 (July 6–12) compared to 50 in week 26 (June 22–28).
The incidence rate has thus risen to 1.7 positive cases per 100,000 inhabitants. The positivity rate is 0.5% for over 19,000 tests performed.
An increase in activity by SOS Médecins associations for suspected COVID-19 cases was also observed last week, rising from 1% to 3% in week 28 of 2020—representing nearly 260 cases—while the number of emergency room visits remains low.
Increasing number of identified clusters
Since July 6, 2020, 9 clusters have been identified in the region, confirming active circulation of the virus.
This resurgence is characterized by the identification of transmission chains during private parties or gatherings linked to infected individuals returning from countries with high viral circulation (Madagascar, India, etc.).
The Gironde department has moved to moderate vulnerability
Given the trend in all indicators: an increase in the number of clusters (3 in week 28-2020 compared to none in week 27-2020), increased activity by the SOS Médecins Bordeaux association regarding suspected COVID-19 cases and the number of cases (49 positive cases in week 28 of 2020), it has been decided to upgrade the Gironde department’s vulnerability status to “moderate,” reflecting the department’s vulnerability.
Increasing Vigilance
This shift in vulnerability for the Gironde department, as well as the upward trend in indicators for other departments in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, calls for maximum vigilance. This is all the more important given that compliance with protective measures is declining among the population, even though these measures are well known to everyone. We have seen that, collectively, adherence to these measures played a major role in curbing the spread of the virus; it is now important to keep in mind what we have just been through.
