Assessment of vaccination coverage among individuals targeted by the MenBvac® vaccination campaign in Dieppe and the surrounding area. June 2006 – May 2009

Background - Between 2003 and 2009, the department of Seine-Maritime, particularly an area encompassing Dieppe and its surroundings, experienced a hyperendemic situation of invasive meningococcal infections linked to the circulation of a specific strain, meningococcus B:14:P1.7,16. A MenBvac® vaccination campaign was launched by the DDASS in June 2006 targeting children and adolescents aged 2 months to 19 years who were residing, attending school, or in group childcare in the six cantons covering the Dieppe hyperendemic zone. A study was conducted to measure meningococcal B:14:P1.7,16 vaccination coverage among the population targeted by the vaccination campaign between June 2006 and May 2009. Method - Vaccination coverage was calculated using a database established to manage the vaccination campaign and containing all eligible individuals. Vaccination coverage was calculated by dividing the number of eligible individuals vaccinated by the number of eligible individuals in the database. Calculations were performed for the first dose of vaccine, for primary vaccination (two or three doses of vaccine), and for complete vaccination (primary vaccination and booster). Results - The study population consisted of a cohort of 28,384 children born between 1988 and 2008. Coverage for full vaccination was 66%. The dropout rate between the final dose of the primary vaccination series and the booster dose was approximately 13%. Uptake among children aged 11 to 14 at the time of their invitation, most of whom were vaccinated in middle school, was significantly the highest (76% for full vaccination), while that among 18- to 19-year-olds was the lowest (29%). Conclusion - Although cases still occur in vaccinated areas, the hyperendemic situation of IIM in the Dieppe area has gradually disappeared since 2009, suggesting that the vaccination campaign had a positive impact on reducing the number of cases.
