Prevagay Report 2015, Paris. HIV seroprevalence survey among men who have sex with men who frequent gay social venues

In 2015, the Prevagay study was repeated in Paris, with the primary objective of estimating HIV prevalence among men who have sex with men (MSM) frequenting gay social venues in the city and describing the characteristics of MSM infected with HIV. The study was conducted using a cross-sectional, anonymous, and random approach among MSM frequenting bars, saunas, and backrooms in Paris, as well as in Lille, Lyon, Montpellier, and Nice. Behavioral data were collected via questionnaire, along with blood samples collected on filter paper. HIV antibody testing was performed by the National HIV Reference Center. Among the positive samples, viral load testing and antiretroviral treatment status were assessed. In Paris, 1,076 MSM frequenting the 18 venues investigated agreed to participate. Half of them were under 44 years of age. More than 80% identified as homosexual. More than 45% had had more than 10 sexual partners in the past 12 months. As in other cities, the lack of condom use was significant and more pronounced among HIV-positive MSM. HIV testing had been performed in the previous 12 months for 59% of MSM, excluding those who knew they were HIV-positive. The prevalence of HIV was estimated at 16.1% [95% CI: 12.5–20.4]. This estimate was not significantly different from that observed in other cities, with the exception of Lille. Among HIV-positive MSM, 91% had been diagnosed, and 95% of them were on antiretroviral therapy. These results support strengthening the promotion of various protection methods and diversified prevention strategies during outreach activities in gay social venues, particularly the dissemination of pre- and post-exposure prophylaxis aimed at limiting the risk of transmission. They also support the continued promotion of repeated HIV testing.
